Making Money Online with Adsense

Contrary to popular myth it can be done. You hear stories and complaints all the time from people making $1 a month. The reason is simple - they don’t know what they are doing. I like Adsense for one simple reason. It allows a complete computer illiterate like me to make money online. No skills required other than a half functioning brain and a determination to succeed. Well okay - it helps if you understand SEO and you should if you have been reading my blog. That is what I do and that is the secret to making money online. SEO is what drives traffic and traffic is all that is important. All modesty aside - I am really good at getting traffic and it has nothing to do with my good looks or computer savvy. It has everything to do with - write this down - Getting Backlinks. A little on-site tweaking and a lot of backlink building equals traffic.

I wanted to add the ever popular screenshots to this post but they are so small as to be unreadable so I will list my earnings using text as well. If any of my computer savvy friends feel the urge to tell me how to make a screenshot larger by clicking on it (like blogger does) please fill me in as I haven’t the patience to figure this out. (I told you I was mentally challenged when it comes to computers)

Monthly Adsense Revenue = Currently averaging $3000-$3500 on beginners blog (Best month = $5200). The top 7 blogs across all my networks bring in roughly 20K a month in Adsense. The shot below is for November and I added it to explain the slow start concept to you. Without getting into all the reasons (I’ll save it for the book) it is normal to see low earnings at the start and end of each month and higher earnings mid month. This month started out with a $60 day and is climbing back up to the $100 mark ($96 yesterday). It was at $23 bucks early this morning which tells me today will end around $110 or so. Mid month usually sees days of $150 - $200 per day and then trails off again at the end of the month.

The shot below shows my all time earnings with this account - just over $65k. This is for the past two years and includes about $8k from the other blogs. The main blog has earned roughly $46k this year and the remainder in year one. (Two of my other networks have earned more)

The Beginners blog has also earned just over 15K from affiliate sales this year - the largest source from Project Payday which sits quietly out of the way down at the bottom of the page - the least effective spot and I have wondered what it could do if I just put it where my posts are.

Overall the Beginners blog has earned a little more than 60K this year with total expenses (re: link building) about $1800. Not bad for a blog that averages 4 posts a month and costs me nothing to maintain.

Traffic

The blog averages 1500 - 2500 visitors on weekends and 3500 - 4500 weekdays. This is all search engine traffic. 90% from Google. On days I post I get an increase between 5000 and 6500 visitors - my Adsense earnings/affiliate sales don’t see an increase on those days and this is why I have stated that social traffic does not convert to sales. Traffic has increased steadily every month and is due to targeting new keywords. The site ranks on page 1 on G for over 70 related terms and I’m adding more every month.

That is my system - pick a keyword and get to the top of the serp’s with it. Then repeat with a new term. Over and over and over. It works and it gets easier to do as you build up authority for the site as a whole. Last week I showed just how easy I can claim top spot for just about any MMO related keyword I want. It took less than an hour for Google to rank me number 2 for “make money online in Canada” without quotes and number 1 with quotes. (12 million competing pages)

Now while this all comes across as bragging I’m not really that impressed with myself as I know that this can be done by anyone. And that’s the whole point of this post - if you are starting out online the chances are good that you are going to come across Problogger or John Chow or Shoemoney and then spend the next year trying to duplicate what they have done. You will fail - yes - you will. You just don’t know it yet.

The reason you will fail is because they don’t teach you how to make money online. You will copy them like Caroline Middlebrook has done or John Cow did - and then you will begin to wonder why you still aren’t making money even though you have 3000 RSS subscribers. Caroline still hasn’t figured it out (you don’t have the right traffic Caroline) or you will sell out like the Cow did when you realize how much work is involved in building a social site with no return on the investment. Most of you will never see 3000 subscribers to begin with so take a cue from them - they aren’t making money following the A-List and they are successful as far as social blogging goes. Closer to home two friends of mine Vic and Court are busy with new ventures in spite of 3000 and 5000 subscribers to their flagship blogs. Why? Because there is no money in just having readers - they are using the flagships to funnel traffic to where they can make money. All the people I just mentioned have talent and quickly grew a large audience - most of you won’t even get that far - far enough to realize that you are wasting your time chasing bloggers. I have readers as well and truly enjoy them but I don’t need them to make money.

And that is why my system succeeds while social blogging doesn’t.

If you are new here and made it this far then you have just experienced what I do - I write agonizingly long posts full of terms that Google is going to rank me for. When I finish I am going to go out and build backlinks for all those terms and the end result will be that G will send the same traffic to this blog as it does to my other one. This site will be making the same kind of money as the other MMO blog but in a quarter of the time. And then I will build another site and do it all over again.

There are 36 million pages telling you how to make money online in Google’s index - only one of them sits on top of the list and it doesn’t belong to an A List blog. Google it and then start reading.

Adsense Tips - Adsense Help - Adsense Techniques

It goes without saying that we all need more traffic to our websites. This can be achieved in numerous ways. I'd like to explore once specific traffic source a little deeper.

Although it maybe prudent to mention a few to start with, some will be obvious and some will be not so obvious. Natural search engine rankings, advertising, articles, blogs, newsletters, rss feeds, videos, joint ventures, press releases, social bookmarking, social networking and the most important ingredient that should run through the whole of these is quality.

One of the areas, blogs, has always been a grey area for me personally, until I discovered a few important facts. Perhaps I knew them, but when put into a certain context they meant more.

Allow me to explain further...

We all have been told that within our strategy we must link a blog to our website; in fact as many blogs as we can muster the energy to do. So yes I'm sure we've all gone out and made ten blogs. As a consequence of such effort we have seen very little traffic. So as a natural result we've returned our attention back to our websites, made them bigger and better and sat back and waited, checking our adsense revenue a few times a day.

Despondency sets in and we can't see the wood for the trees. So what's going on?

First we must remember that blogs get regarded has having more value than a 'normal' website. We know this to be true as we see them ranked above most websites. Yet our own blogs on typical blogging sites never seem to get anywhere in the rankings. There is an important distinction here to. A blog on a 'blogging site' will also rank higher than a blog on a normal - mywebsite.com website

Should you wish to test this theory out, put the same content on your website with a Page Rank of 4 and then put the same content on a blog with a zero page rank. The result sadly is that the blog could well rank above your own website.

That said... It would appear we are working 'upside down' on our efforts. If we put 2 hours of work on our blog, rather than our website per day, we may get the blog to a page rank of 5 quicker? In doing that, we achieve backlinks to our own site from a better page ranked site. Plus if we have adsense on the blog we are killing two birds with one stone.

I am only half way through fully testing this theory and it may require a further six months, but all the evidence suggests that this will work. If we have a website that sits nicely in a niche, then to have a blog or two back-linking, will only increase our websites inner page ranks and they will appear higher in the search engines.

As we add content to our website, tweak a little and add it to our blogs. The end result will be a page rank of 4 for our website and a page rank of 5 or 6 for our blog. When this happens, funnel the links back to your own site and it should nudge the page rank up one notch. The blog of course should be 'subject' relevant to your own site.

Seven Ways to Increase Your Blog’s AdSense Revenue Without Being a Sellout

It seems that when it comes to AdSense on a blog, most bloggers are either all for it, or completely against it. Don’t Get Slashdotted (or Digged, if You Will) – It may be exhilarating to see that your latest post getting tons of traffic from a very popular site, and you may think that will bring you ad revenue, but the fact is, you’ll be paying a ton on bandwidth overage and those users aren’t going to be clicking on your ads.

With That in Mind, DO Get Googled – Slashdot user path: visit Slashdotted post, leave flaming comment, leave, visit next Slashdotted link. Google user path: search for something, click on your site, read useful information, see enticing ad relating to that information, click on ad.

Pick Your Topics Wisely – Forget about finding a niche topic for your blog. When going for AdSense revenue, user loyalty is overrated (so much for not being a sellout). You don’t want users in browse mode, you want users in search mode. Find a niche topic for this post, because that’s what is going to bring in people who are looking for something in particular, whether it’s a product that fulfills a niche need, a frightening yet poorly-documented medical affliction, or strange bugs killing their plant.

Write Good Posts – Before writing a post, think about what that post is about, then ask yourself what someone searching for that information might Google. Try searching for that string. If there is too much competition, you may want to target a slightly less popular keyphrase. You may even want to try the Overture Keyword Tool if you need suggestions. If there is still too much competition, reconsider your post. Do you really have anything new to say about this topic?

Blog Like No One is Reading – All of the above sound great in theory, but who really knows what will strike the balance between high-search rate and low competition? Blog about things in your life – things that you know – using descriptive keywords, then see what gets the Google traffic. Learn. Repeat.

I’m pretty sure that we all can make this claim - “I know quite a lot about AdSense”. This of course will be true in a certain context. For example when you are talking to an outsider, someone who doesn’t apply AdSense to his or her website, then yes, you will know quite a lot about AdSense. But on a level playing field sat next to another AdSense fanatic, could you make the same claim?

Not trying to shoot anybody down in flames, I’m sure we’d all love to discover more and more AdSense tips and tricks day after day. Constant research is the key.

I once listened intently to a business philosopher who suggested that if you don’t allocate time each day to explore the potential of your business, you will go stale. New Google Adsense Help Forum for Adsense Publishers

AdSensePro team has just given an invitation to Adsense publishers to join the new AdSense Help Forum. They are going to close the old Adsense Help on Google Groups and open this new one.

Unfortunately, right now the forum is only available in English. They are working on making this new platform available in additional languages, although they don’t have a set date at this time. If you can’t read English, you must wait (or use my trick, take advantage of Google Translate lol)

The layout is almost the same as the Help Center with some helpful links, so you can easily navigate from pages to pages. They also added a system of levels to reward your contributions to the Forum, and profiles where you can put a picture next to your name. You can subscribe to the Forum (or to individual discussions) by RSS feed. You can post a question and receive your answer by email. You can even vote on which response best answers the question and mark a best answer to a question you asked.
You just need 30s to sign-up with your existing Google account then you are good to go

Adding Google sitemap to blogger.com blog account

You can now add Google sitemap to your blogger.com account and increase your chances of being indexed in Google search engine result. You can add a Sitemap to your account to give Google more information about the pages in your site to help Google crawl them more effectively.

Step # 1: Login to sitemap account

At the top of screen you will see option to add site. Just paste URL of your blog

(for example http://adsensehelpcorner.blogger.com/)

Click on Ok button. Next you will get confirmation message. Your site has been added to your account.

Step # 2: Now you need to verify your ownership of blog to view detailed statistics. Click on verify link. Google offers two methods of verification. You can either upload an HTML file with a name we specify (which is not possible with Google Blogger account), or you can add a META tag to your site’s index file. Adding META tag via template code is possible so just select Add a META tag from drop down menu:

It will generate code for you, copy the meta tag and paste it into your blogger.com template section).

Step # 3: Go to your blogger.com and login to your account. Goto your blog > Click on TemplatePaste the META tag code after section:

Click on Save Template changes button

Click on Republish Index only button > Wait for few seconds so that your blog being published successfully.

Step # 4: Now goto sitemap account and click the box that read as follows:

I’ve added the META tag in the home page of http://adsensehelpcorner.blogger.com/. Click on Verify button.

Step # 5: Now your site is added to sitemap account and verification is done. Next you need to add actual sitemap url. Since blogger.com account don’t allow you to create a text file or anything else you need to add your site feed (ATOM xml) file as a site map. Click on add a sitemap link:

Step # 6: You can add a Sitemap to your account to provide Google additional information about about your blog. Google will process your Sitemap and provide information on any errors in the Sitemaps tab as well your sitemap will be downloaded everyday to index your blog fast.

Select type as : Add General Web sitemap

Now you need to add Atom 0.3 feeds. Generally, you would use this format only if your site already has a syndication feed and this is the only way to add sitemap to your blogger.com account.

Paste url of your Atom feed: For example http://adsensehelpcorner.blogger.com/atom.xml and click on Add Web sitemap:

Update: If you are using a new blogger beta system, use http://yourblogname.blogger.com/feeds/posts/full as a feed url.

You will get confirmation:

You have added a Sitemap to http://adsensehelpcorner.blogger.com/. Reports may take several hours to update. Thank you for your patience!

And you are done and your blog will be now index very fast (depend upon your posting and content).

About AdSense for your blog

Blogger provides a simple way for you to make money with your blog. AdSense is Google's content-targeted advertising program. This means that you don't select keywords or categories for your ads. Instead, Google's servers determine what your posts are about and display the most relevant ads to your readers. So, if you blog about baseball, there might be ads for Major League Baseball memorabilia next to your post. If you blog about painting, there might be ads for art supplies.

Blogger requests access to your AdSense account in order to allow us to create and place ad code on your page through our layouts and template tools. As part of this process, you may notice that Blogger is receiving "0%" of your AdSense earnings - this means that you will receive the same amount for clicks or impressions as you would creating the ad code from your AdSense account. To view any partners that have requested access to your AdSense account, and their associated revenue shares, please log in to your AdSense account, click the "My Account" tab, and choose the "Account Access" sub-tab. To take full advantage of other AdSense options and settings, you can sign in to the AdSense site and have a look around. That's where you can see how much money your ads are earning and all that good stuff.

How do I show ads between my posts?

To show ads between your posts first go to your Template Page Elements tab. Then, in the "Blog Posts" section, click on "Edit". A pop-up window will appear with options to configure your blog posts. Check the box next to "Show Ads Between Posts". (Note: You must be signed up for AdSense before you can check this box.)


Once you check this box you'll see the configuration options for your ads. You can then select how often you would like ads to be shown after your posts.



For example, if you want ads to be displayed after every post, select "1" from the drop-down menu. (Please note that AdSense policies limits you to a total of 3 ad units per page and Blogger will automatically prevent you from going over this limit.) You can then select your ad format and colors. I am just doing experiment to see if the Google's newest technology works on my site. So far, the result is satisfactary. The advertisement served is pretty relavent to the content of my page and is not that annoying.

Ad Placement

Actually, I hate to bring the advertisement into this site, since I am passionate to provide more information about Shanghai and life here just because I love to do it. I am just conducting the experiment to see how it works and how much revenue it will bring. :-) I'd like to keep the banner to the second half of my content - after the article I created, so it should still be acceptable. What do you feel?

I tried to use all the layout of Google Adsense:

468 x 60 Banner
120 x 600 Skyscraper
728 x 90 Leaderboard
300 x 250 Inline rectangle

Finally, I choosed the smallest one - the 468 x 60 banner which serve only up to two sites. It looks more decent and fits into the design of my pages.

Andersj mentioned the idea to show the advertisement only on certain pages older than one month, so frequently readers always get fresh and ad-free content, and people from search engine will be served with content relative ads.

Still Expect Some USD for the hosting

To be honest, I still expecting to see money coming in from Google Adsense. At least, it may pay off for the domain names, the disk space. I always feel lack of disk space when I what to share something, like the Alcatel OT715 Mobile Software Suite. It does not make such sense for me to pay everything just to help others. :-)

How do I put AdSense on my blog (using Layouts)?

First of all, choose the blog that you want to put AdSense on, and go to the Template Page Elements tab. You can get there by clicking the Layout link on the dashboard, or clicking the Template tab from the posting or settings page of the blog.

Once you're there, click one of the Add a Page Element links. Choose the one that corresponds to the area of the page that you want to contain your AdSense ads. When the 'Choose a New Page Element' window comes up, select the AdSense option.

The next page displays an AdSense sign-up page. If you're new to AdSense, go ahead and fill it out to create an account. If you already have an AdSense account, click the sign in link instead so you don't accidentally make an extra account.

Once you've signed in or created or account, you'll

get the configuration screen. Use the menus to select a format, and one of our preset color templates. If you want more control, you can also

enter colors of your own choosing by typing the hex codes in the spaces provided.

If for any reason you need to switch to using a different AdSense account, click the Switch to a different publisher ID link at the bottom. When you have things the way you want them, just save your changes and go see how it looks on your blog. Come back to tinker with the settings any time by clicking the edit link for the AdSense unit on the Page Elements tab.
